BATTLE OF FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACHES || Saturday’s game between BYU and ASU marks head coach Lee Cummard’s first matchup against a fellow Big 12 first-year head coach. Arizona’s Becky Burke, Miller at Arizona State and Houston’s Matthew Mitchell are each in their first season at their respective schools.

BUILT ON BALL PRESSURE AND BUY-IN || The Cougars have held 12 of 14 opponents under the 70-point threshold and are 12-0 in such games. BYU has kept eight of its foes under 60 points this season, and the Cougars are 23-2 over the past three seasons when surrendering less than 60 points. BYU’s two losses came to No. 17 Vanderbilt and No. 8 TCU, which were each held below their season average points per game. BYU held Vanderbilt 3.1 points under their average and TCU 15.5 points under their 87.5 points per game.

BYU ranks 18th in the country, fourth in the Big 12, for opponent 3-point percentage, surrendering just 24.7 percent shooting and just 5.3 3-point makes per game. The Cougars also sit 24th nationally and fourth in the Big 12 in opponent field goal percentage, holding opponents to 34.6 percent from the field. Cummard’s squad also has eight players who average over a steal per game: Hamlin (2.1), Cannon (2.0),  Traore (2.0), Gibb (1.8), Benally (1.8), Hudgins (1.3), Rohkohl (1.2) and Barber (1.0).

Hamlin is one of the top players in the country in transition. The freshman scores 42 percent of her points off of transition buckets, which ranks in the 98th percentile nationally. She also ranks in the 99th percentile in fast break points per 40 minutes with 7.3. Over her last five games, Hamlin is averaging 8.1 points per 40 on the run. She also leads all Big 12 freshmen in steals and steals per game with 29 and 2.07 per contest.
