SAN DIEGO, Calif. — BYU women’s tennis fell to San Diego, 6–1, Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Toreros secured the doubles point by taking courts two and three. BYU earned a win at the No. 1 position, where Gracie Levelston and Kendall Kovick edged Vilma Krebs-Hyllested and Kristina Nordikyan, 4–3, but San Diego claimed the other two doubles matches to go up 1–0.
In singles play, BYU’s lone point came at the top of the lineup. Levelston bounced back after dropping the first set to defeat Charlotte Keitel, 4–6, 6–4, 1–0 (10–3), in a match-deciding super tiebreaker. It marked Levelston’s third straight singles win.
San Diego responded with victories on courts two through six to seal the match. No. 53 Hannah Read held off Kendall Kovick in a tight two-set battle at No. 2, 7–5, 6–4. Vilma Krebs-Hyllested topped Sue Yan Tan at No. 3, while Maria Shmakova and Kristina Nordikyan picked up wins on courts five and six, respectively. At No. 4, Gabby Gregg rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat YuYun Chen in three sets.
BYU moves to 2–1 on the season, while San Diego also improves to 2–1.
