PROVO, Utah — Eight student-athletes from the 2025 BYU football team were today named 2025 Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, including four who were repeat honorees from 2024.
BYU defensive captain Tanner Wall, safety Talan Alfrey, punter Sam Vander Haar and receiver-returner Tiger Bachmeier were all honored for a second-straight year, while receiver Cody Hagen, tight end Noah Moeaki and offensive linemen Andrew Gentry and Kyle Sfarcioc were first-time honorees in 2025.
The CSC Academic All-District award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore and be a starter or significant contributor who played in 90 percent of the games.
WALL, a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree and first team Academic All-American in 2024, helped lead BYU to a 25-4 record as a starting safety over the past three seasons. The 6-1, 205-pound senior from Arlington, Virginia, was previously named first-team All-Big 12 by the conference coaches, All-America honorable mention by Phil Steele and was selected as a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Wall finished the year second on the team in tackles (71) and interceptions (4). He was a finalist for both the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy and the Pop Warner College Football Award as well as a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award. He graduated with a 3.86 GPA in the finance program and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at the Marriott Business School.
Based on his high academic and athletic achievement, Wall has advanced to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-Americans will be announced for the 2025 season in late January.
VANDER HAAR, from Melbourne Australia, transferred to BYU for the 2024 season after playing in 12 games for Pitt as a freshman. The 6-0, 219-pound, junior participated in 27 games for BYU over the past two seasons. In 2025, he averaged 42.6 yards per kick while downing 15 of his 40 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line and was a Ray Guy Award – Ray’s 8 honoree twice. Vander Haar is majoring in communications with a 3.88 cumulative GPA. Previously he was named to the All-ACC Academic Football Team in 2022 and CSC Academic All-District in 2024.
ALFREY, a 6-2, 205-pound senior from Auburn, Washington, Alfrey played in 14 games for BYU in 2025 where he collected 11 tackles, including eight solos and one tackle for loss. The Cougar co-captain is majoring in exercise science and has a 3.78 cumulative GPA. Alfrey played in 43 games with 12 starts over his BYU career and was named Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2023 and CSC Academic All-District the past two seasons.
BACHMEIER, from Murrieta, California, compiled a 3.51 GPA while graduating with a degree in computer science from Stanford in just under three years. The 6-1, 190-pound junior receiver-returner played in 13 games for the Cougars in 2025 as a graduate transfer enrolled in the MBA program at the Marriott Business School. Bachmeier finished the 2025 season with seven catches for 59 yards. He also recorded five punt returns for 48 yards, a kick return for 21 yards and one rushing attempt. At Stanford, Bachmeier played in 24 games for the Cardinal with 13 starts at wide receiver. He totaled 46 receptions for 476 yards and two touchdowns.
GENTRY, a 6-8, 315-pound junior from Littleton, Colorado, started all 14 games for BYU at right tackle. At the conclusion of the 2025 season, he was named Big 12 Honorable Mention Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Gentry has a GPA of 3.70 at BYU and is majoring in business management. He helped anchor a BYU offensive line that was No. 14 nationally in fewest sacks allowed with just 16 in 14 games.
SFARCIOC, a 6-4, 310-pound junior from Peoria, Arizona, is a communications major with a 3.60 GPA. The transfer from Southern Utah played in 14 games with five starts for BYU at both offensive guard positions. Sfarcioc along with Gentry, helped Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin rush for a conference-high 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.
HAGEN, from Draper, Utah, maintains a 3.98 cumulative GPA in exercise science. The 6-1, 195-pound sophomore receiver-kick returner played in 13 games for BYU. Hagen had 12 receptions for 97 yards to go along with three rushes for nine yards and two touchdowns. He also had 18 kickoff returns for 409 yards, good for fourth in the Big 12.
MOEAKI, a 6-3, 245-pound redshirt freshman from Peoria, Arizona, is a finance major with a 3.96 GPA. He played in all 14 games for BYU in 2025 with two catches for 16 yards and a touchdown at tight end. Moeaki also played on special teams.
