GREENSBORO, N.C. — BYU remains in fifth place with 263 points following the second day of competition at the Big 12 Championship.

Wednesday’s competition saw the Cougars secure three new top-10 BYU finishes. Two came in the finals of the 500 freestyle, with Easton Mousser swimming the second-fastest time in program history at 4:19.92 and Darwin Anderson earning the third-fastest performance at 4:20.81. Tyler Edlefsen also earned a top-10 time, hitting the wall at 1:45.48 in the 200 individual medley in a swim-off, the fifth-fastest performance in team history.
Prelims
Prelims began with the 500 freestyle, where Tanner Nelson, Anderson and Mousser all qualified for finals. Nelson took fourth overall in the preliminary event, finishing in 4:18.31. Mousser and Anderson also finished 11th and 14th overall.
The second event of the day was the 200 individual medley, where Jacob Ballard and Edlefsen qualified for finals. Ballard secured his spot in the bonus final round with a 1:47.34 finish. Edlefsen also qualified with a ninth-place finish overall.
The third and final event of Wednesday’s slate was the 50 freestyle, where Tanner Edwards, Lucca Ferreira and Max Kleinman all earned spots in the first heat of finals. Kleinman finished 17th overall, hitting the wall in 19.95. Edwards (20.09) and Ferreira (20.11) earned 22nd and 23rd with their performances.
Finals
The 500 freestyle final saw two new BYU top-10 times set by Anderson and Mousser. Additionally, Nelson took fourth overall in the event, earning a time of 4:17.04. Nelson competed in the championship heat, marking his preliminary performance as one of the top eight finishes in the event.
In the 200 individual medley, Ballard placed 20th in 1:47.34 and Edlefsen earned 13th in 1:46.65.
All three 50 freestyle qualifiers — Edwards, Ferreira and Kleinman — competed in the first heat of finals, where Kleinman took first in the heat in 19.72. Overall, Kleinman earned 17th, while Edwards placed 21st in 20.09, with Ferreira following in 24th in 20.61.
Diving
BYU dive competed in the 3-meter event Wednesday, where freshman Ashton Sparks led the Cougars with a 15th-place finish in the preliminary round at 285.70, qualifying him for finals. Martí Llop competed, taking 19th at 209.50, and Elijah Baker finished 22nd, totaling 183.20.
In finals, Sparks earned 11th with a score of 301.70, improving by 16 points.
