HOUSTON, Texas — No. 29 BYU women’s tennis dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 47 Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston secured the doubles point to open the match, but BYU showed resilience throughout competition, keeping multiple courts within reach.
The nationally ranked No. 82 pair of Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli defeated Gracie Levelston and Sage Bergeson 6-1 on Court 1, while Sue Yan Tan and Bella Lewis battled to a narrow 7-6 (7-2) loss against Houston’s No. 87 duo on Court 3. Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen were tied at 6-6 on Court 2 before play was halted.
BYU’s fight continued in singles play, highlighted by strong performances across the lineup that extended several matches deep into competition.
Karina Mohamed pushed a tight match on Court 6 before falling 6-4, 7-5, while Bergeson battled in a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 5 singles. The match was clinched on Court 2 despite a competitive opening set from Kovick, who dropped a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak before falling 6-2.
Three courts remained unfinished, showcasing BYU’s late-match momentum. Levelston rebounded after dropping the first set to force a deciding set on Court 1, Tan split sets at No. 3 singles, and Chen battled into a third set on Court 4 when play was stopped following the clinch.
BYU moves to 11-3 overall, while Houston improves to 11-0 on the season.
