Riner and Dahl set BYU top 10 records at USC Trojan Invitational

Carson Riner and Brayden Dahl set BYU top ten marks in the javelin and 400-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon at the USC Ron and Sharlene Alice Trojan Invitational at the Alyson Felix Field at Loker Stadium.

LOS ANGELES – Carson Riner and Brayden Dahl set BYU top ten marks in the javelin and 400-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon at the USC Ron and Sharlene Alice Trojan Invitational at the Alyson Felix Field at Loker Stadium.

Riner made his season debut in the javelin throw, recording a toss of 69.14m/226-10 to put himself at No. 7 all-time at BYU in the event. The sophomore improved his personal record by more than three meters in the performance to take second overall at the meet. Brinton Paulson made his season debut in the event alongside Riner taking fourth with a throw of 63.44m/208-1.

“Carson demonstrated his capability of throwing distances exceeding his previous personal record during training throughout the year.” Throws coach Niklas Arrhenius said, “It was an exciting moment when he achieved this feat on his very first throw of the year.”

Dahl came across the line in 50.32 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles to earn himself a spot at No. 7 all-time at BYU in the event. The junior finished second overall in the race ahead of teammates Garrett Copelin, Treyton Anderson and Jayden Jessee who each took second, third and fourth respectively.

The trio of Copelin, Anderson and Jessee each also competed in the 110-meter hurdles with Copelin coming out on top in first place coming across the line in a personal-record 14.25 seconds. Anderson and Jessee finished just behind him in second and third in 14.43 and 14.44 seconds each.

Tyler Poole set a personal record in the shot put with a toss of 17.02m/55-10.25 to take second. Erik Bryant joined him in the event, taking seventh. The pair also competed on Friday afternoon in the discus and hammer throw.

Silas Zimmerman and Dallin Thornton went head to head in the pole vault taking first and second respectively with Zimmerman clearing 5.17m/16-11.5 and Thornton clearing 4.92m/16-1.75.

Josh Taylor appeared in the 400-meter dash, an event where he holds the No. 4 all-time record at BYU. Taylor claimed second place in the event finishing in 46.80. The senior was joined by Jonah Heimuli who took sixth and Kaden Passey who took 12th. 

Connor Saunders and Carter Walker competed in the high jump each clearing a height of 2.01m/6-7. Saunders finished second and Walker took third.

Dahl, Taylor, Anderson, Jessee competed in the 4x100-meter relay finishing third overall coming in at 40.44. The same group with Jessee being replaced by Copelin made up the 4x400-meter relay squad that closed out the meet taking second with a time of 3:11.48.
