PROVO, Utah — No. 46 BYU women’s tennis jumped out to an early lead with the doubles point but ultimately fell to No. 51 Utah, 4–2, in Saturday’s rivalry matchup.
BYU started the afternoon with momentum in doubles play, winning two courts to claim the opening point of the match.
The tandem of Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen secured a 6–3 win on court two, while Sue Yan Tan and Bella Lewis followed with another 6–3 victory on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars. The match on court one went unfinished with the Utes holding a narrow 5–4 lead.
Utah responded in singles play, winning four matches to take control of the dual.
At the top spot, Gracie Levelston dropped the first set 6–0 but bounced back with a 6–4 second-set win before falling in the deciding set 6–1.
On court two, Kovick kept things tight but ultimately fell 6–4, 7–5.
Yan Tan also pushed her match to three sets, dropping the opener 6–3 before responding with a 6–4 second-set win. Utah took the final set 6–0 to secure the point.
Chen fell in straight sets at the No. 4 position, 6–1, 6–0.
BYU earned its second point of the day on court six where Karina Mohamed delivered a 6–4, 6–3 victory.
The match on court five between Sage Bergeson and her opponent went unfinished after Utah clinched the team win. Bergeson had taken the first set 6–4 before play was halted late in the second set.
