BYU Cougars  ||  16-7, 5-6  ||  Big 12 Conference

WHAT'S AT STAKE?

With a win, BYU would notch its most wins in a season (17) since the 2021-22 campaign, which culminated in a trip to the NCAA Tournament, besting 16 wins in both 2022-23 and 2023-24. Coach Cummard would also record the third-most wins by a first-year head coach in program history.

HOW HARD CAN YOU GET HIT, AND STILL MOVE FORWARD?

BYU is 5-1 this season in games immediately following a loss and has three players averaging 14.0 or more points in bounce-back wins. (Gibb, 15.8; Hamlin, 15.0; Mackey-Williams 14.0) The Cougars have surrendered just 61.2 points to opponents on 36.2 percent from the field and 24.3 percent from deep. BYU has also swiped 9.8 steals per game and forced opponents into 18 turnovers per game that turn into 20.1 points off opponent giveaways. The Cougars have also grabbed 14.8 offensive boards per game, which they have converted into 13.4 second-chance points in bounce-back wins.

ROAD WARRIORS

BYU is 4-3 through six road contests this season, matching its road win total from 2024-25. The Cougars finished last season 4-8 on the road. A win at K-State would give BYU its most road wins in a season since 2022-23 (6-6).

PERPETUAL PERIMETER PRECISION

BYU currently holds the second-longest active and the third-longest all-time streak of games with a made 3-point field goal in NCAA women’s basketball. The Cougars have connected on at least one triple in each of the previous 816 games. The streak began on March 2, 2000, in an 86-69 win over Air Force. The only team with more is Chattanooga, with 828 consecutive games with a made three-pointer.

SCORING COMES AT A PREMIUM

Cummard’s squad prides itself on its ability to defend. BYU has held 18 of 23 opponents under the 70-point threshold and is 16-2 in such games, with their only losses to No. 18 Baylor and at Oklahoma State. BYU has kept nine of its foes under 60 points this season, and the Cougars are 23-2 over the past three seasons when doing so.

In losses to No. 8 TCU, No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Baylor and Oklahoma State, BYU held each opponent under their season scoring average: Vanderbilt 3.1 points under, TCU 15.5 points under its 87.5 PPG and Oklahoma State 19.8 points under its 86.8 average.

The two teams to outscore their average against the Cougs were No. 22 West Virginia, with 91 points, the most BYU has surrendered this season and Kansas, which scored 81, the most to an unranked team.

SECOND-HALF SURGE

The third quarter has been especially kind to the Cougars this season as they have outscored opponents in 16 of 22 games by an average of 9.2 points. BYU is 14-2 when outscoring its opponent in the third period. When losing the third, BYU is 2-5. In Wednesday’s loss, Kansas won the third 25-13, the worst margin of the season for the Cougars in the third.

BYU has also seen great success in the second half, averaging 32.9 first-half points on 40 percent shooting. In the second half, those numbers jump to 38.5 points and 42.3 percent shooting. BYU has outscored opponents in the second half in 14 of 23 games, including besting rival Utah 23-17 in the third quarter and 29-13 in the fourth to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit for a 12-point victory.

SECOND-CHANCE SPECIALISTS

BYU leads the Big 12 in offensive rebounds per game and has three players who rank in the 86th percentile or higher in offensive rebound percentage nationally, the estimated percentage of available offensive rebounds secured by a player while she is on the floor (Kambree Barber, Lara Rohkohl, Bola Yussuf).

Since returning from injury, Barber has been a force on the offensive glass as she ranks in the 99th percentile for offensive rebounding percentage at 11.6 percent: 2.4 per game.

Lara Rohkohl ranks in the 96th percentile at 15.8 ORB% while recording 3.0 offensive boards per contest. Bolanle Yussuf sits in the 86th percentile with a 13.0 ORB% and 1.8 offensive rebounds per game. Yussuf is also two ORB away from cracking the top-15 for offensive rebounds by a freshman and three away from passing her coach, Keilani Unga, for 15th on the all-time list.

MIGHTY IN THE MIDDLE

Lara Rohkohl and Bolanle Yussuf have been a tag-team in the paint for the Cougars this season, combining for 13.7 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.6 steals per game. Rohkohl ranks in the 99th percentile nationally with a field goal percentage of 66.3 percent. Yussuf sits in the 89th percentile at 55.4 percent on the season, which ranks 8th in the BYU freshman record.

Of the duos’ 12.2 boards, 4.8 per game come on the offensive glass. Rohkohl ranks in the 96th percentile nationally as she grabs 15.8 percent of all available offensive boards while she is on the floor.

BUILT ON BOARDS

BYU ranks second in the Big 12 with 41.43 rebounds per game and 14.0 offensive boards per game. The Cougars have recorded 152 offensive rebounds since the beginning of conference play, leading to 125 second-chance points, 13.8 and 11.4 per game, respectively. The Cougars grabbed 26 offensive boards in their win over Arizona State, the fifth-most in a game in BYU history and scored 20 second-chance points.

Despite the strong rebounding averages, BYU has been outrebounded in each of its last five games, and is now 3-3 when being outrebounded. Over the last five, the Cougars have been bested 42.6-33.0 on the glass. Cummard’s squad, which has thrived off second-chance points this season, has grabbed just 9.0 O-boards and scored 9.6 second-chance points over the last five contests.
