It’s Tourney Time

Following a 31-match regular-season schedule, the postseason starts now with BYU hosting the MPSF Men’s Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Cougars will look to keep their season alive, with a stellar performance in the MPSF Tournament possibly leading to an NCAA Tournament berth.

All-MPSF Honors

The MPSF announced its all-conference honors on Tuesday, with four Cougars being honored. Trent Moser and Connor Oldani were named to the All-MPSF Second Team. AJ Cottle received All-MPSF Honorable Mention and was named to the All-Freshman Team. Trevor Herget was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

Still Top-10

After starting of the season at No. 8 in the AVCA poll for the first five weeks of the season, the Cougars moved up a spot to No. 7 for a few weeks. A few losses pushed the Cougars back to No. 10, but they have not fallen out of the top 10 this season, and ended the regular season right back where they started, at No. 8.

En-Trent-ched Offense

Senior outside hitter Trent Moser continues to lead the Cougars offensively this season with 3.25 kills per set on a .328 hitting percentage. Moser had a career-high 26 kills in BYU’s five-set loss to USC two weeks ago. His previous career-high came earlier this season against Stanford (22).

Un-Herget-able Passing

Senior setter Tyler Herget is averaging 10.28 assists per set. That mark is third-best in the MPSF and sixth-best in the nation. Herget is currently No. 6 in all-time assists at BYU with 2742 in his career. He needs 48 more to reach Rob Neilson who is No. 5 at 2790.

Block Stars

BYU is currently 11th in the NCAA in blocks per set at 2.309. AJ Cottle is the Cougars’ individual leader with 1.012 blocks per set. His blocks per set are 23rd-best individually in the NCAA.

Getting to Know Stanford

The Cardinal enter the postseason with an 11-14 overall record and 8-6 MPSF record, good for the No. 4 seed in the MPSF Tournament. Stanford has reached the semifinals of the MPSF tournament in four consecutive seasons, looking to continue that streak this week. As a team, Stanford is fourth in the MPSF with 2.19 blocks per set, and fifth with 7.78 digs per set and a .279 hitting percentage. The Cardinal is sixth in kills (11.27), assists (10.61) and aces (1.26). Opposite Moses Wagner was named to the All-MPSF second team for a second straight year, while setter Jacob Little-Phillips landed on the MPSF All-Freshman Team. Stanford now has 118 all-conference selections all-time.

Series Snapshot

BYU leads the all-time series 35-20. The two squads faced each other three times last season, with the Cougars picking up two wins during the regular season in Provo and the Cardinal winning in the MPSF Tournament to end BYU’s season. Stanford defeated BYU twice this season in Palo Alto (3-1 and 3-2), and the Cougars will look to bounce back Wednesday with a season-saving victory.
