Playing Career
Mike played at BYU from 1962 to 1966. He was captain of the BYU golf team in 1966 and played in the NCAA tournament in Holston Hills Golf Course in Tennessee.
Mike Smith, life member of the PGA, joined BYU's staff as the Women's Golf Assistant Coach in January 2008.
Mike played at BYU from 1962 to 1966. He was captain of the BYU golf team in 1966 and played in the NCAA tournament in Holston Hills Golf Course in Tennessee. Before coming to BYU, Mike won many junior tournaments and competed as a amateur on the Utah golf circuit. After graduating from BYU, he became the head golf professional at Cascade Golf Course, then Fore Lakes Golf Course and then moved to St. George, Utah, where he became director of golf instruction at the Southgate Teaching Center.
Mike began teaching golf in 1972. He has 35 years of experience in golf instruction. In 1989 and 1998 he was selected as Utah Section PGA Teacher of the Year. From 1995 to 2006, he was voted best teacher in the state of Utah by Golf Digest Magazine.
Mike began teaching with the Nikkon Sports Co. from Japan in 1989. They sent young students, both men and women, to Mike to learn the fundamentals of the golf swing. Several of these students are now golf teachers in Japan and teach some of the most successful Japanese golf professionals.
In 2007 & 2008, as Dixie High School's golf instructor, Mike led the Dixie High School golf teams (men and women) to the state championships where they won the 4A State Championship.
Mike has currently worked with Marisa Baena (currently on the LPGA tour), and many of the professionals in Utah. He has started programs for older adults in St. George, Utah, bringing hundreds back out to the golf courses and has also directed and taught at many successful junior golf programs. It is estimated that he has taught over 25,000 people how to play the game of golf.
Mike and his wife, Cyndy, are the parents of five children and have eight grandchildren. They reside in Saratoga Springs, UT.
