Dalton finishes fifth at USATF Championships, three other Cougars compete

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four BYU athletes competed in the 2014 USATF Championships from Jun. 25-29, including Chase Dalton, who finished fifth in the decathlon Friday in Sacramento.

A senior in 2014, Dalton finished second among collegiate athletes with 7,592 points, trailing only Wisconsin’s Zach Ziemek.

Dalton’s highest finish in the ten events came in the javelin throw, in which he finished second with a throw of 60.69 meters. He threw the discus 44.06 meters – good for fourth overall in the event.

Sophomore Korey Smith and freshman Brian Matthews also represented the men’s track team at the event. Smith finished 13th overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.93, and Matthews finished ninth in the junior decathlon with 6750 points.

On the women’s side, freshman Nicole Laws finished sixth in the junior heptathlon. With 4,863 points, Laws placed fourth among college athletes. Her best finish came in the 100m hurdles, in which she came in third with a time of 14.26.
