PROVO -- BYU track and field coaches Mark Robison and Craig Poole were pleased with what they saw as the men’s and women’s teams got the indoor season going at the BYU Invitational.

Women

The Cougars went 1-2-3 in the women’s 60m hurdles with senior Amy Otis, junior Mindy Robins and sophomore Fatima Makakala.

Senior Mindy McClurkin and junior Porshe Giddings finished in the top two in the women’s 60-meters and Natalie Stewart and Nachelle Stewart did the same in the 400-meter finals.

The 4x1 lap relay team of Jenessa Carlson, Taylor Stapley, Jane Larkin and Tamra Keys took first while the Cougars’ other team, consisting of Chelsea Taylor, Porshe Giddings, Natalie Stewart and Kylie Measom took third.

Men

Brian Weirich, a junior, took the mile run while Reagan Frey, Josh Adams and Robert Harrison finished in the three through five spots.

Sophomore Justin Hedin finished over a second faster than his nearest competitor in the 800-meters while senior James Heiner finished third in the same event.

The Cougars were strong as usual in the 3000-meters, with senior Jon Kotter taking first almost eight seconds better than freshman teammates Jonathan Nelson who in turn finished 16 seconds faster than the third-place finisher.

Sophomore Rhyan Atrice also claimed the top spot in the 400-meters for BYU.

Both the men's and women's teams will compete next at Idaho State on Friday.
