COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU sophomore Jimmer Fredette has been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season.
This is the third player of the week honor earned by BYU this season. Fredette was named player of the week on Dec. 15 and Lee Cummard earned the honors on Nov. 17.
A 6-2 guard from Glens Falls, N.Y., Fredette led the Cougars to wins at San Diego State (69-59) and over Utah (63-50) at home last week. Against San Diego State, he scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting, while recording a career-best five steals. Fredette scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half, including a personal 9-0 run to give BYU a 61-55 lead. He then dished out one of his four assists to complete a 15-0 BYU run to put the game away. Fredette also pulled down five rebounds, while hitting all six of his free-throw attempts. Against first-place Utah, Fredette scored a game-best 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while dishing out three assists and collecting two steals.
On the week, Fredette averaged 26.5 points, 3.5 steals, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He shot 51.4 percent from the field (18-for-35), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (3-for-9) and 93.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-for-15).
