PROVO, Utah — Following a bounce-back win at Houston, BYU returns to the friendly confines of the Marriott Center for a top-25 matchup with the No. 18 Baylor Bears on Saturday, Jan. 17. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. MT with the game streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast live on BYU Radio 107.9, byuradio.org and the byuradio app with Jason Shepherd on the call.

Matchup Breakdown

Saturday’s matineé feels eerily familiar to the last matchup between the Cougars and Bears at the Marriott Center, as Baylor came into that game ranked 18th in the country before being handed a 78-66 defeat on Feb. 8, 2025, at the hands of the home team.

BYU trails the all-time series 3-2 against Baylor, with the Bears winning last season’s lone meeting, an 83-71 BYU loss in Waco on Feb. 8, 2025. Saturday is the rubber match for games played at the Marriott Center, with the series tied at one game apiece.

BYU Cougars  ||  14-3, 0-0  ||  Big 12 Conference

WHAT'S AT STAKE?

With a win, the Cougars would earn their first win over a ranked team under first-year head coach Lee Cummard. BYU would also push its win streak in Provo over Baylor to two games and tie the all-time series at 3-3. A win on Saturday would move the Cougars to 4-2 in Big 12 play through six games, matching their conference win total from a season ago.

COUGARS VS. THE POLLS

BYU holds a 22-54 all-time record in ranked matchups and a 1-4 all-time clip against the 18th-ranked team in the AP poll. The lone victory was the 78-66 win over Baylor on Feb. 7, 2025. This will be the third ranked matchup in six all-time meetings against the Bears.

YOUNG GUNS, BIG BUCKETS

BYU’s freshmen are making huge contributions to the Cougars’ success early in their careers. Olivia Hamlin, Sydney Benally, Bolanle Yussuf and Braeden Gunlock have combined for 40.4 percent of all points scored by the Cougars so far this season. Between the freshmen and sophomores, Delaney Gibb, Brinley Cannon and Kambree Barber, the underclassmen account for 66.0 percent of BYU’s scoring this season. In Big 12 play, the underclassmen have combined for 51.4 of BYU’s 68.2 (75.4 percent) points per game.

AFTER INTERMISSION INTENSITY

BYU has led in 10 of 17 games at the break; however, the Cougar offense has continued to improve as the game wears on. The Cougs average 33.3 first-half points on 39.6 percent shooting. In the second half, those numbers jump to 39.9 points and 44.1 percent shooting. BYU has outscored opponents in the second half in 12 of 17 games, including outscoring Arizona State 43-28 (+15), and 17-8 in the third quarter alone.

The third quarter has been especially kind to the Cougars as they have outscored opponents in 13 games by an average of 10.3 points. BYU is 12-1 when winning the third period.

BLOCK. STEAL. REPEAT

BYU is the only Big 12 team this season and one of 12 teams nationally to average 11.1 steals and 4.6 blocks per game. There have been five Big 12 teams since 1999-2000 to finish a season with at least 4.6 blocks and 11.1 steals per game.

OWNING THE GLASS

BYU leads the Big 12 with 44 rebounds per game, good for 11th in the country. The Cougars also average 15.2 offensive boards per game, which leads the conference and ranks 31st in the country. BYU has recorded 55 offensive rebounds in the last three games, leading to 44 second-chance points, 18.3 and 14.7 per game, respectively. The Cougars grabbed 26 offensive boards in their win over Arizona State, the fifth-most in a game in BYU history and scored 20 second-chance points.

The Cougars have five players averaging 5.3 rebounds or more per game, with eight recording at least 3.0 per contest. Kambree Barber leads the way with 7.0. The others: Lara Rohkohl (6.9), Bola Yussuf (6.2), Brinley Cannon (5.8), and Marya Hudgins (5.3). BYU is 12-2 when outrebounding opponents this season.

SECOND-CHANCE SPECIALIST

Since returning from injury, Kambree Barber has been a force on the offensive glass for the Cougars. The sophomore ranks in the 99th percentile for offensive rebounding percentage as Barber grabs 15.3 percent of all available offensive rebounds while she is on the floor. Barber has recorded 24 offensive boards in eight games for an average of 3.0 per game. Barber is one of five players in the Big 12 to average over 3.0 offensive rebounds per game, joining teammate Lara Rohkohl on that list.

LAST YEAR'S BOUT

BYU has five players on this year's squad who suited up against Baylor last February. Delaney Gibb, Kambree Barber, Brinley Cannon, Hattie Ogden and Heather Hamson combined for 33 of the Cougars’ 71 points (46.5%), 15 of 33 rebounds (45.5%) and five of 15 assists (33.3%) last season.

Gibb went for 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including three made triples, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. Barber, Cannon, Hamson and Ogden combined for 12 points, nine rebounds and an assist in the 12-point defeat.

PERPETUAL PERIMETER PERFECTION

BYU currently holds the second-longest active and the third-longest all-time streak of games with a made 3-point field goal in NCAA women’s basketball. The Cougars have connected on at least one triple in each of the previous 811 games. The streak began on March 2, 2000, in an 86-69 win over Air Force.
