Before BYU
SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE:
- A 6-foot-6 guard/forward from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, Young averaged 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a freshman in 2003-04, receiving honorable-mention all-league recognition
- Good mid-range shooter, the 6-foot-6 swingman shot 47 percent from the floor while helping the Texans achieve a 24-9 record and second-place finish in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference

OZEN HIGH SCHOOL:
- Four-year letterman, three-time all-region and two-time Texas All-State player at Ozen High School where he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds as a senior
