At BYU
Played in 24 of 27 games as a freshman, backing up seniors Mark Handy and Jay Cheesman ... his 5.5 average was sixth in the Cougar seasonal tally in 1977 ... he led the Cougars twice in rebounding and scoring in his freshman year ... his best performance was 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 113-85 loss to Arizona at Tuscan ... as a sophmore he was vastly improved ... led BYU in rebounding (246), blocked shots (28) and field goal percentage (57%) ... led the WAC in field goal percentage (170-301) .565 ... Alan averaged 14.4, second behind Danny Ainge in 1977-78, spent a lot of time on the bench due to foul trouble ... was forced out of action for one game (Idaho State) with an elbow infection suffered in an on-court collision with Nevada-Reno's Edgar Jones ... Alan's single game high as a sophomore was 25 points coupled with 12 rebounds in an 80-75 consolation loss to Cal-Fullerton in the Cougar Classic ... Taylor was one of the five all-tournament team members at the Cougar Classic ... led the Cougars three times in scoring during his sophomore season, but more importantly led BYU in rebounding in 23 of the 29 games played ... scored in double figures in 25 games, nine games were also double figure rebound productions ... honorable mention all-WA in '78 ... in his junior season at BYU he led the team in rebounds per game with 9.5 and was third on the team in scoring with 13.6 ppg ... in his final season for the Cougars he set a Marriott Center record in the season finale with 23 rebounds ... Taylor finished out his senior season averaging 10.9 rebounds and 12.5 ppg ... he was also named to WAC All-Conference Team his senior season and his work kept several wins alive.
Before BYU
Almost single-handedly led Kennedy High to a share of the Mid-Valley League basketball title in 1976 ... was selected as AAA player of the year in the City of Los Angeles ... led the Mid-Valley league with a 26.2 scoring average ... prep coach Dean Cadwell says, "He's the finest ball player I've coached in 15 years on the job." ... was MVP in the Taft Tournament, setting a scoring record with 86 points in three games, including a season high of 34 points in one game ... hit 70% of his field goals during his senior season, averaging 13.7 rebounds ... had a grade point average of 3.27.
