LAS VEGAS -- Stellar play from Cougar guards Jimmer Fredette, Jackson Emery and Tyler Haws led BYU to a 110-104 win over Nevada in the HoopTV Las Vegas Classic in Orleans Arena on Tuesday.

All three members of the BYU backcourt scored new career highs, shooting a combined 26-of-35 (.743) and 19-of-19 from the charity stripe for a total of 78 points.

Fredette led the way with 33 points (11-of-16), becoming the 41st member of the 1,000-point club on a three with 10:04 left to give him 24 points for the game and 1,001 for his career. He now has 1,010 total points, adding six assists and three steals against the Wolfpack.

Emery had 25 points (8-of-12, 5-of-7 from downtown), three steals, three assists and two rebounds in 37 minutes.

Haws was lights out in the first eight minutes of the game, stroking all six shots he took for 12 early points. The freshman finished with 20 points in a perfect night, 7-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

“I think that you have to figure out different ways to win depending on the way the game goes,” said BYU head coach Dave Rose. “We knew early we were going to have to score a lot of points. If we’re going to push the ball against a team with really talented offensive players, you’re going to have to make good on every possession.”

Fredette and Emery took over in the second half, scoring 22 and 18 points, respectively, in the latter period.

Jackson Emery hit a short jumper going left, then hit a three in the corner off an assist from Haws to give BYU a quick 5-0 spurt and a 51-50 lead.

Fredette scored on two layups after swiping two Wolfpack passes on back-to-back possessions, giving BYU the lead, 59-56.

The junior later hit two free throws and a shot off the glass, then Haws made his first basket of the period on a backdoor layup for an even 100 points to Nevada’s 90. A late three by Fredette turned out to be the nail in the coffin for the Wolfpack, with BYU making all its free throws down the stretch to get its sixth win in a row.

“Our defense won this game for us,” Rose said. “We got four or five steals we converted into easy baskets. They didn’t get those. They gave us those two extra baskets which turned out to be the difference.”

Fredette kept the Cougars tight with Nevada at the close of the first half. Fredette scored 11 points, including 5-of-5 from the free throw line, as BYU went into the half trailing 50-46.

BYU shot 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the first half and 58.6 percent from the field in the first period. The Cougars hit 67.7 percent from the field in the second half and 63.3 percent overall. After going 16-of-16 from the line in the second half, the nation’s fourth-best free throw shooting team went 27-of-28, the highest free throw percentage BYU has ever had when attempting 20 or more free throws.
