Lundell's 66 leads BYU in final round of Rustic Collegiate Classic
MOORPARK, Calif. – Junior Carson Lundell shot a 66 in the final round of the Rustic Collegiate Classic to finish tied for second overall and lead the BYU men's golf team to a third-place finish on Friday.
Lundell's 66 (-5) was the best score of the final round and tied for the third-best round at the tournament.
"It was really nice to have the guys play some pretty good golf this tournament," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Everyone was a bit better and at times really good. I hope we gained some much-needed confidence this week going into the spring."
The Cougars finished with a final round of 284 (E), giving them a third place finish after shooting a 290 (+6) and 282 (-2) in the first two rounds. Pepperdine won the tournament at the Rustic Canyon Golf Course with a final round of 273 (-11).
San Diego took second (282) and Loyola Marymount (287) was behind BYU in fourth while Saint Mary's finished fifth despite posting a 284 (E) today.
"Carson played really well through the middle of his round today with three birdies and an eagle," Brockbank said. "Kelton also played solid all week and was very consistent. It was nice for him to have a solid finish."
Kelton Hirsch finished ninth with a 71 (E) in the final round while Cole Ponich tied for 15th after shooting a 72 (+1).
With a 75, Max Brenchley tied for 22nd and David Timmins took 30th after a 76 (+5).
Austin Banz, playing as an individual, put together another impressive round matching his second round score with another 69 (-2) in the finals to finish 19th overall. Elijiah Turner also matched his second round with another 74 (+3) to finish tied for 27th.
BYU finished up its fall schedule with the Rustic Collegiate Classic and now awaits the schedule for the 2021 spring season.
