Five Cougars Podium, two advance to finals on second day of Big 12 Championships

Garrett Stanford, Jefferson McMullin, Max Davis, Mark Bryant and Tyler Poole podiumed while Carter Cutting and Garrett Copelin advanced to the finals on the second day of the Big 12 Championships Friday afternoon.

TUCSON, Arizona – Garrett Stanford, Jefferson McMullin, Max Davis, Mark Bryant and Tyler Poole podiumed while Carter Cutting and Garrett Copelin advanced to the finals on the second day of the Big 12 Championships at Drachman Stadium, Friday afternoon.

Bryant and Poole finished fourth and sixth respectively in the shot put to claim eight team points for the Cougars. Bryant, a freshman, recorded a personal best mark of 17.71m/58-1.25 while Poole hit a mark of 17.54m/57-6.5.

Stanford and McMullin finished in close succession in the 3000-meter steeplechase to take fifth and sixth respectively. Stanford finished in 8:43.42 with McMullin just behind him at 8:43.97. Davis finished moments later to take eighth overall in the event in a time of 8:47.26. 

Carter Cutting returned a day after qualifying for the finals in the 1500-meter to claim victory in his heat of the 800-meter prelims to once again earn a spot in the finals. The Junior finished the two lap race in 1:47.97, the seventh fastest times in the prelims.

Garrett Copelin advanced to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles posting a time of 13.97 to take ninth overall in the prelims. Both the 110m Hurdles and the 800m finals take place on Saturday May 16.

Kaden Passey finished out the second half of events in the decathlon to finish ninth overall with a score of 7356 points. He finished 14th in the 110m hurdles, first in the discus with a toss of 45.98m/150-10, eighth in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.43m/14-6.25, fifth in the javelin with a throw of 55.85m/183-3 and second in the 1500m cross the finish line in 4:25.65.

Multi-athletes Ben Barton and Jayden Jessee competed in the long jump finishing 21st and 19th respectively.  Barton and Jessee also finished 11th and 15th in the 110m hurdles. They were joined in the event by Treyton Anderson who finished 13th.

Brayden Packard finished 19th in the 800m prelims in a time of 1:50.50. Dallin Thornton and Silas Zimmerman competed in the pole vault each clearing 4.93m/16-2 to take 12th and 13th each.

Josh Taylor finished 17th in the 400-meter prelims joined by teammates Jonah Heimuli and Ty Oustrich who finished 31st and 40th each. 

James Corrigan had a season best race in the 3000m steeplechase finishing ninth in a time of 8:47.87 joined by Jackson Henstrom who finished 12th.

The Cougars end the day as a team in sixth with 32 points.
