Before BYU
- Prepped at Snow Canyon High School where he was coached by Reed Secrist and Wally Ritchie
- Recorded 317 strikeouts in varsity prep baseball career
- Gatorade Utah baseball player of the year and 3A MVP as a senior in 2013
- Second team all state as a freshman l and First team all state as a sophomore, junior, and senior
- Had a 4-6 record, a 0.83 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 59 innings, batting .432 as a senior
- in 2013 also playing at first base, batted .446 with three home runs and 37 RBI
- Team won back-to-back 3A titles
- Had a 9-1 record season as a junior in 2012 when he struck out 109 batters and had a 0.82 ERA in 59 innings, batting .375
- As a sophomore he batted .450 with 16 doubles and three home runs
- 3A all-tournament team and third team All-American honors voted on by the NHSBCA (National High School Baseball Coaches Association).
