Lettered three times in football at Pinole Valley High...was all-league and a member of the California Dream Team...also an all-star and the team's most valuable lineman...in high school his team won three state championships coached by Jerry Deuker.

Attended Contra Costa JC...was all-state, all-conference and All-American...recruited by schools including Penn State, San Jose State, Oklahoma, UCLA, Washington and Texas A&M.
