Cougars in the Pros

BYU has a rich history of success in professional football.

From players to coaches, the Cougars have reached the pinnacle of the football world in many different ways. More than 400 former players have played professionally to date.

Currently, BYU has 22 players in the NFL, including some of the league's brightest stars including wide receiver Puka Nacua, linebacker Fred Warner, do-it-all player Taysom Hill and 1,000-yard running backs Tyler Allgeier and Jamaal Williams.

In the coaching world, no coach has had more recent success than BYU alum Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs. Reid is coming off of back-to-back Super Bowl rings, and three in the last five years as the head coach in Kansas City. Reid is the NFL's active leader with 258 career regular-season wins, 26 postseason wins and is No. 4 in all-time wins in the NFL.

Historically, Steve Young is one of BYU's most recognizable NFL players, having spent 15 years in the league, including 13 with the 49ers. Young won Super Bowl XXIX and was named the MVP after throwing six touchdown passes to beat San Diego 49-26. He was the NFL MVP in 1992 and 1994 and set an NFL-record 112.8 passer rating in 1994. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2005. Punter Lee Johnson had the longest NFL career of any Cougar, spending 18 seasons with six teams. Johnson is currently back in the BYU athletic department working in development. Brian Billick, a former BYU tight end and graduate assistant, along with Mike Holmgren, a former quarterbacks coach have both won Super Bowls as NFL head coaches as well. Athletic director Tom Holmoe won four Super Bowls with the 49ers, three as a player and one as a coach.

BYU currently has 22 players on NFL rosters (updated June, 2024).

Of those players, the Cougars have four quarterbacks, four running backs, three offensive linemen and two wide receivers representing the offensive side. Former quarteback Taysom Hill, one of the NFL's most versatile players continues to see snaps at quarterback, tight end, receiver and entering 2024, fullback.

On defense, BYU has four linebackers represented, three cornerbacks, one safety, and one defensive lineman on a current roster.

Wide receiver Puka Nacua, a fifth-round selection by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2023 NFL Draft was one of the league's biggest stories in 2023. Nacua set the NFL rookie single-season records for receptions and receiving yards with 105 and 1,648, respectively. He also broke the rookie record for most receiving yards in a playoff game with 181 yards and a touchdown in his lone playoff game.

Linebacker Fred Warner is arguably the NFL's best linebacker. Warner, a third-round selection by the 49ers is a three-time first-team All-Pro selection and three-time Pro Bowler. He has led San Francisco's defense since 2018, including two trips to the Super Bowl. In 2021, Warner signed. five-year $95 million extension, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid linebackers.

The Cougars have been represented in 52 of the last 57 drafts and in 69 of the 89 drafts conducted overall. NFL teams have now drafted a former BYU player 155 times since the team’s first draft choice in 1938 (John Stringham, Back, ninth round). Including this year’s post-draft free agency signings, 217 additional Cougars have received NFL deals as free agents following the annual draft.

Most recently, offensive tackle Kingsley Suamtaia was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. With the selection of the 6-foot-5, 326-pound Suamataia, BYU has had its last three starting left tackles drafted in the NFL. In 2023, Suamataia’s former teammate Blake Freeland was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round while Consensus All-American Brady Christensen was taken by the Carolina Panthers in the third round in 2021.

BYU has had 12 first round picks, the most recent being Zach Wilson, who was the No. 2 pick of the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft. Prior to Wilson, defensive end Ezekial Ansah was taken No. 5 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Since then, Ansah was named to the Pro Football Focus All-Rookie Team in 2013 and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 after leading the NFC in sacks. Ansah is the highest defensive playe ever taken in the NFL Draft.

There have been 46 different Cougars in the Super Bowl, collecting a total of 47 championship rings. Kansas City head coach Andy Reid and tight end Matt Bushman won back-to-back rings in Super Bowl LVII and LVIII. Reid is tied with the most rings now with four, three as a head coach and one as an assistant with former defensive back and current, athletic director Tom Holmoe (including three as a player and one as a coach with the 49ers).

Most recently, linebacker Fred Warner has appeared in two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, coming up short to Reid's Chiefs both times.

Offensive lineman Bart Oates has three Super Bowl rings, winning two with the New York Giants and one with the 49ers. Quarterback Jim McMahon led the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl XX victory in 1986 and then won a second ring with the Green Bay Packers in 1997 at Super Bowl XXXI. Defensive linemen Brett Keisel and Chris Hoke both have a pair of rings while playing together for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tight end Dennis Pitta won a ring in 2013 with the Ravens. Pitta had four catches for 26 yards including a 1-yard touchdown reception in the Super Bowl XLVII win over the 49ers. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy has appeared in three Super Bowls, winning two with the New England Patriots.

From 1980-1992 the Cougars had at least one representative in the Super Bowl each year.
