- A native of Salt Lake City, Hughes comes to BYU from the University of Alabama with 21 years of coaching experience, including four seasons in the NFL, 14 in college football and three at the high school level.

- Served as a football analyst at the University of Alabama under head coach Kalen DeBoer this past season, helping the Crimson Tide qualify for the College Football Playoff and finish the season ranked No. 9 with an 11-4 record
- Coached wide receivers for the New England Patriots in 2024 in his second stint with the NFL franchise. He previously served as an offensive assistant for three seasons with the Patriots from 2020-2022 under Bill Belichick
- Part of Kalen DeBoer’s staff as an offensive analyst at the University of Washington in 2023, helping the Huskies earn an undefeated regular season and finish No. 2 after advancing to the College Football Playoff title game for a 14-1 season record
- Spent two seasons (2018-19) as the head coach at Bountiful High School in Utah
- Led Division II Minot State in North Dakota as the head coach for three seasons (2014-16)
- Served as a quality control assist working with quarterbacks at Ohio State in 2013 under head coach Urban Meyer, helping the Buckeyes go undefeated in Big Ten play and finish 12-2 overall
- Spent nine seasons at Snow College as head coach (2011-12), offensive coordinator (2005-10) and wide receivers/tight ends coach (2004)
