The NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships have evolved significantly since their inception in 1982. During the early and mid-era of the sport through 2008, the championship field consisted of 12 qualifying teams who competed at a single championship site. All qualifying teams competed in two semifinal sessions, with the top six teams advancing to the Super Six final to determine the national champion.
Beginning in 2009, the format was revised to reflect the sport’s continued growth. The championship field was reduced to eight teams, with competition divided into two semifinal sessions and the top two teams from each advancing to a four-team final (“Four on the Floor”) to determine the national title.
BYU has made eight appearances at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships, all of which came during the 12-team championship format used through 2005. In this structure, all qualifying teams competed at the national championship site in semifinal sessions, with advancement to the Super Six final determined by team performance in those sessions.
BYU’s championship appearances reflect consistent qualification to the national championship field during the program’s peak competitive eras, prior to the modern eight-team championship format implemented in 2009.
