Coach Pete Meredith has served as BYU's pitching coach since 2014, helping the Cougars to eight West Coast Conference titles and seven trips to the NCAA Regionals since coming to Provo. He coached All-American, three-time (2015-17) WCC Pitcher of the Year and four-time NFCA All-Region honoree McKenna Bull. Including Bull, four different BYU pitchers have won a total of six WCC Pitcher of the Year awards under Meredith.
Meredith guided BYU to a No. 21/20 finish in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and NCAA Women's Softball RPI in 2017, a season where the Cougars garnered a program-best 11 Pitcher of the Week honors. Since 2014, eight different Cougars have been awarded a total of 52 WCC Pitcher of the Week honors.
During that span, Meredith has also helped BYU pitch 110 shutouts, as well as four no-hitters, with two of those coming in 2016. The pitching staff has averaged 296 strikeouts per season during Meredith’s time with the Cougars.
As a player, Meredith was a 12-time ASA All-American, inducted in the ASA/USA National Softball Hall of Fame in 2016 and International Softball Congress Hall of Fame in 2007.
He pitched the U.S. to a gold medal at the 1988 World Championships and won silver at 1995 Pan American Games, being named to the All-World Team seven times and Team USA four times.
Meredith pitched in a record 23-consecutive International Softball Congress World tournaments, setting records for most tournament wins (61), no hitters (8), strikeouts in a tournament (100) and strikeouts in a game (21). He also holds the record for most wins in ASA/USA Championship play (55-27).
Of his ASA playing career Bill Plummer, longtime communications coordinator of the ASA, said, "Peter Meredith was one of greatest pitchers in the history of the Amateur Softball Association and the International Softball Congress. In the ASA, Meredith holds the record for most wins in ASA national championship play, compiling a 55-27 record before retiring from Major competition in 2002. He also shares the record for most wins in one Men's Major National Championship with eight in 1988 for Trans-Aire of Elkhart, Ind. and is the record holder for most innings pitched in one national tourney (88) in that same national championship. In that 1988 national championship, Meredith fanned 138 batters, second best in ASA history, and between 1988-1989 he hurled 50 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. In 1998, Meredith won a record tying six games in leading the USA National Team to the ISF World Championship in Saskatchewan, beating his native country, New Zealand, 4-0, in the gold medal game. In 1995, he was a member of the USA Pan American team that finished second behind Canada in Parana, Argentina."
Meredith played professional men's fastpitch for Sportsman Enterprises, Dave Frye Plastering, Farm Tavern, Trans Aire International and Larry Miller Toyota. He hails from Dunedin, New Zealand, and has one daughter with his wife, Angie.
